of the union speech. and then they'll have to press it before congress. the challenge is, harry reid today said, as dana bash is recording, he doesn't think, for example, an assault weapons ban can get past the hour. there's going to be a little bit of jockeying to see how do you get this done. >> one of the things, too, no head of the atf, something they have not had in place. i imagine that's probably a priority, yes? >> reporter: i would imagine that would be something they would take care of rather quickly. >> all right. jess, thank you. of course, we're going to be keeping our eye on that briefing in briefing room at the white house. we expect there will be questions about some of those proposals, perhaps details, that we can learn there. taking a look at the podium, as soon as that starts, we'll probably dip in and see if there's any news coming out of that briefing. we'll be watching for all developments as well. >>> the state of new york, it's not waiting for the federal government to push for tougher gun laws. the state assembly plans to vote on new regulations approved last night. las

here. first of all, there was a lot of talk about harry reid, a senate majority leader, who's a gun owner. he's from the gun rights state of nevada. he has been very cautious saying that the senate should be cautious, but my understanding from talking to a number of sources is that he's speaking for himself but he's also speaking from the perspective of political reality, that there are a number of people in his caucus who would potentially really get slammed for supporting anything. so that's why he wants to take it slow. he doesn't want his people to walk the plank and suddenly not be the senate majority, lose the majority. but the other thing i think is really important to keep in mind is just how different this is. kind of taking it up to 5,000 or 10,000 feet. i cannot tell you how many times after so many of these tragedies, after one of their own gabby giffords was shot, calling up senate democratic sources saying, are you going to do anything? nope. nothing's changed. after aurora, nope, nothing's changed. n newtown changed the dialogue, the decision at the white house and he

. harry reid is the democratic majority leader of the senate. the nra stayed out of his senate race, they probably could have defeated him. they stayed out. he's not a big supporter of gun control, but he did issue a statement today saying that the president's proposals were thoughtful and that everything should be considered. he didn't endorse them. he didn't endorse new gun control. but he could have blocked them. the president at least has the democrats saying we'll give you a fair shake here, mr. president. he's going to have a hard time getting some democratic votes, however. then comes the republican controlled house and, brooke, look at the statements out from the republicans in the house, conservative republicans in the senate, the president doesn't have the votes. is he going to say i tried and then walkway or is he going to travel the country? you heard him in that remark, he said he needs help. he wants parents, members of congress come home, he wants people to call them, write them letters. will he sustain that for two months, three months, four months and more if need b

with fellow democrats. >> they do. you look at harry reid from nevada, it's clear he's not going to take the lead on this in the senate. he will leave that to his chief lieutenant. today we had pat leahy come out and he said quote we will pass what we can get. that doesn't mean -- that sure doesn't sound to me like he believes the president's entire package is going to get through. there are also senators democrats up for re-election in gun states like montana louisiana, south dakota. so those are real issues for the president because, of course, they want to keep control of the senate and also there are western senators who are going to be looking for some middle ground. >> see, the key words, middle ground. >> if there is any. >> gloria, thank you. >>> one of the country's oldest airlines now has a brand new look. we're going to show you how american airlines is engaged in a major makeover. >>> plus, it's not just 20s anymore. the big change that you'll be seeing very soon at some atms. to these proposals, including the majority leader in the senate, harry reid. this may be a fight that just gets started this year. and is something that he needs to -- he needs to keep pushing for. there's a reason that democrats haven't pushed gun control legislation in a really, really long time. now, some people say the politics of this has changed because of -- especially because of newtown. but not an easy issue to get through. >> yeah. another tough issue might be immigration reform. certainly a lot of latinos who voted for the president, 71%. he got that vote. they're expecting big reform and a lot to be done on their part. do you see that happening? i mean, they want it done because it didn't happen the first term. they want it now. >> absolutely. and obama has promised that will be an immediate priority. there is some -- some potential for a compromise bill being fashioned in the u.s. senate. marco rubio who -- who's saying some things similar to what democrats are saying on immigration reform. you have people like john mccain who has a history of supporting immigration reform. so you
